I once stood (for a few seconds) in a cloud of R-22 freon after an EXV let
loose on a 200T chiller. It covered the roof of the building in a fog in a
very short period. I'll move faster next time!

During my career I was involved in construction projects which included the
installation of freon piping systems. After freon was introduced into the
systems great care was exercised in purging it from any portion of the system
that was to be cut into or welded on to avoid producing phosgene. We never had
any problems, but we were aware of the potential.

Related, sort of- even before smoking became taboo, it was banned on
nuclear subs. From what I understand the main reason was if there were to be a
freon leak, the freon would turn to phosgene as it went through the lit
cigarette. Oh yeah, the subs ran/run freon a/c.

Pretty scary. This would be so easy to do, too. I couldn't have told you
what phosgene is or how little it would take to do permanent damage. Even
reading the label wouldn't have necessarily highlighted the dangers in that
case. Every product in existence comes with a warning that it will cause cancer
in Californians, so it's pretty easy to decide not to bother with warning
labels any more.

Definitely an important warning for people who cook with brake cleaner....

Seriously though, it seems that fellow is very lucky to be alive, and his
unfortunate experience points out a danger inherent in the use of common
industrial solvents and cleaning products. As the guy said, Read the Label. If
you do, you may look for a different, and safer product.
