Dillon, As far as CARB legality goes, they care more about parts installed that do not have an EO # more than they care about a part from the EO missing. I would not worry so much about the FMU and fuel pump not being on the car. If you truly needed one for inspection, we'd be happy to loan you one for inspection purposes.
If you used the MS in parallel, "technically" is qualifies as an ignition timing retard device. If you plan to use the MS, you will need to use an alternator from a 94-97 car, or install a voltage regulator on the MS. Also, programming will be needed if you wish to use the a/c. There are plenty of people who can tune the MS in CA. I will do some checking for you. Let me know if I can help! I've got plenty of excuses. In the intervening years I've lived in Illinois, Washington, California, been working on the east coast and spent some time abroad. In short, I move around too much to keep any tools, much less find time to work on the car when we are in the same place. Two years ago I injured my shoulder, so to add injury to insult I'm now physically incapable of turning a wrench. That'll get better with time, but I'm sick of waiting. I want my turbo now damnit. Anyhow, I kept up with the planning and I eventually settled on an inter-cooled Garrett T2554 or T2560, probably using hardware from BEGI (for the EO #), and rolling my own engine management with a Megasquirt MS1 (in parallel with stock ECU) & LC1 wideband. I acquired & physically installed the wideband, I have the megasquirt built, and the wiring harness made for the parallel install. I have an NA CAS on-hand, though I've since learned there are some downsides to this. Perhaps a modified crank trigger would be better. Now the MS2 is an option too. After I started down that path, I moved to California. I'm going to have to get my first emissions test here in the next few months which is throwing a wrench in my plans. I'm also going to have someone install the hardware and tune it for me. This leaves me with some new questions. 1. I may stay here in CA for a while, therefore I'd like for the new turbo to be CARB legal. I understand I can get a BEGI S1/2/3 with a CARB EO #, whose papers list an unspecified "ignition retard device". The CARB device as sold by BEGi has no ignition retard, only a fuel pump and FPR. There are folks who added an MS or Xede for timing and passed. I'm going to have to get tested before May if I do stay, so this is a factor in my plans. Am I likely to get through on an MS1, or should I just register the car now and get tested while nearly stock (which requires that I fix the P0402)? 2. Given my new desire to have the system installed by someone with time and tools, is my parts list still good? I like the idea of going Megasquirt, as it will tie into some of my future project to build a touch-screen navigation / stereo / digital gauge display into the dash. I will go another route though if reputable installers don't know how to tune a Megasquirt. 1. BEGI S2 or S3 2.
