I hear nothing but good things about a Mazdaspeed3 for a fun, reliable,
practical four-seater. There are enough of them out there that you could find
a deal too. Bigger? How about a used Caddy CTS-V?

Subject: EXTERNAL: Pick my next car!

I sold my FMII a couple months ago. Hadn't been driving it much, had a
kid, etc...

My '98 Subaru wagon was getting long in the tooth, so I bought a '06 Legacy GT
(2.5 turbo) with 68k on it. Veerrrry clean car; obviously well cared for.

At 69k the turbo failed. Replaced that.

At 69.5k I spun a rod bearing. Nearly done installing a scrapyard WRX motor.

These are not uncommon failures, unfortunately. Recent Subaru forum posts
indicate that some are also having an issue with 5th shedding teeth during
highway cruise. I don't know what's going on with Subaru these days, but I've
had my fill of crap engineering and its resultant cost.

Quite likely I'm going to get rid of the LGT in the spring; bitter doesn't
begin to describe my state of mind.

The question is, what to buy?

20k or less, hopefully less than 15k.

Safe enough to protect my podling.

Some fun-to-drive quotient.

Simple.

Tough.

AWD would be cool but not required, but snow handling is critical

I really wanted an appliance; that's what I was hoping for with the Legacy.
No time for a project car right now.

Civic SI seems cool, except that those trannys are failing too (3rd gear
synchro I guess).

Good friend is pitching the RX8. It IS a blast to drive, but 18mpg?! No way.

What would YOU buy? I'm not coming up with *anything* desirable.
