Man, that's unfortunate, but that could easily happen with ANY auto maker
because they ALL try to weasel out of warranty claims. They're in the biz to
make money, not to "please" anyone. Then again, there's "Luck of the Draw",
and the rule of probability. Out of a great many cars manufactured, relative
few, as a percentage, will be lemons. It just that we read and hear a lot more
about the lemons than we do the sweeter fruit. People without problems seldom
have reason to say much. That's just the way it is.

fwiw, my uncle had a non turbo subaru about 5ish years ago; it spun a bearing
@ 60K. The dealer tried to claim that it was because he didn't have the oil
changed correctlly.
He then produced receipts for pennzoil changes and they then claimed that oil
wasn't good enough. Subaru NA went with the dealer.
They didn't know he was a former diesel mechanic (now a drug rep) and he asked
to see the other bearings - which were fine...he can get pretty fired up, and
well, in the end Subaru put in a new engine, but it was such a painful
experience he is not a big sub fan.

Your problem is that you picked the WRONG Subaru! People buy turbo cars to
hammer them, not to coddle them.
My 2005 Subaru Legacy with BASE 2.5 engine, AWD, and auto - select shift has
been virtually trouble free since new.
70K miles... A rear wheel bearing was replaced under warranty, but that has
been the ONLY thing needed so far, and when they did that, they gave me an
extended warranty to 100K miles.

I'd try ANOTHER Subaru, but a NEW one with the base engine and auto trans.
Mine has been very good.
Additionally, you can find these NEW for $15 -20K or so.

Otherwise, I'd suggest a recent Volvo or a newer VW Jetta. All 3 of the cars
mentioned are among the safest available in their weight range. The best DEAL
would be the Subaru.

How about another wagon? I picked up a 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT8 a couple months
ago. These are going for around 20k, maybe less. 425hp V8 is a nice change from
my 4 cylinder turbos. :-)

I sold my FMII a couple months ago. Hadn't been driving it much, had a
kid, etc...

My '98 Subaru wagon was getting long in the tooth, so I bought a '06 Legacy GT
(2.5 turbo) with 68k on it. Veerrrry clean car; obviously well cared for.

At 69k the turbo failed. Replaced that.

At 69.5k I spun a rod bearing. Nearly done installing a scrapyard WRX motor.

These are not uncommon failures, unfortunately. Recent Subaru forum posts
indicate that some are also having an issue with 5th shedding teeth during
highway cruise. I don't know what's going on with Subaru these days, but I've
had my fill of crap engineering and its resultant cost.

Quite likely I'm going to get rid of the LGT in the spring; bitter doesn't
begin to describe my state of mind.

The question is, what to buy?

20k or less, hopefully less than 15k.

Safe enough to protect my podling.

Some fun-to-drive quotient.

Simple.

Tough.

AWD would be cool but not required, but snow handling is critical

I really wanted an appliance; that's what I was hoping for with the Legacy.
No time for a project car right now.

Civic SI seems cool, except that those trannys are failing too (3rd gear
synchro I guess).

Good friend is pitching the RX8. It IS a blast to drive, but 18mpg?! No way.

What would YOU buy? I'm not coming up with *anything* desirable.
