You may need to remove the bolts instead of simply loosen them. On many
racks the bolt fits in a groove in the spline.

FWIW, I am trying to fix a problem with the steering where the
steering wheel will turn 1.6 turns to the left but only 0.8 turns to
the right (meaning I cannot turn sharply to the right but can to the
left). Other than that the car drives straight as can be when the
