Stephen - Yeah - I do have poly bushes all round...don't remember seeing a
lubrication holes - how did you lubricate?

Ray - by CV joints do you mean those in the half shafts or the prop shaft,
or both? Should I expect to hear the noise with the rear of the car on axel
stands and running it in gear?

Thanks,

Glenn

Do you have polybushes? Mine have start to bind/creak when they need some
lubing.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Ken - I did replace the front sway bar mounts a few years ago after the
original ones cracked, and did check them a couple of months back when
servicing the car, and the noise does precede that check.

Lee - I think I will do that just in case as it is the cheapest option and I
have had to do that before.

Ray - the noise is when moving off forward or reverse.

But after a bit more analysis this evening I think it might be something
more sinister. The noise is actually two or three creaks, it happens every
time I pull off (forward or backward), and generally when I come to a halt
disengaging the clutch as I do so, but only very occasionally when the car
is rolling in neutral and I stop it with the foot brake... Also, I can feel
it through the gear stick...

Any more thoughts?

Glenn

Subject: Under-Car Creaking on Moving Off

Hi folks,

Now it's finally warm enough to have the top down I've noticed quite a loud
"creaking" coming from under the car whilst pulling off (imagine sitting
down onto a old wooden chair). The noise isn't in the car (i.e. clutch
pedal) and there is also a bit of it from 1st to 2nd, but beyond this too
much wind/road noise to hear it.

I can't get any noise from bouncing any of the corners of the car.

Could it be engine or diff mounts, something inside the gearbox diff or
diff?

Any thoughts or tests I could do to isolate it?

Car is a '97 FMII with a regular 5-speed and torsen diff, done 121k miles.

BTW, still have both intake and exhaust cam advanced by about 14' (due to a
crank pulley misalignment when changing the water pump) and am enjoying the
late but more explosive power delivery!
