1954 – Elvis Presley makes his first appearance outside Tennessee at
The Mint Club in Gladewater, Texas.
1958 – Ricky Nelson records “Lonesome Town” and “I Got A Feeling” at
Master Recorders in Hollywood.
1960 – Lionel Hampton and The Four Preps appear on The Ed Sullivan
Show.
1961 – Still recovering from her serious car accident, Patsy Cline
records the Willie Nelson song, “Crazy.”
1961 – The Marvelettes release their debut single, “Please Mr.
Postman” b/w “So Long Baby” on Tamla.
1964 – The Beatles play at the Seattle Center Coliseum.
1965 – Barry McGuire’s “Eve Of Destruction” hits #58 on the Hot 100.
1965 – The Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Do You Believe In Magic” debuts on
Billboard’s Hot 100.
1965 – The Beatles play at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington,
Minnesota. I was there.
1966 – The Beatles perform their postponed set at Cosley Stadium in
Cincinnati at noon, then fly 350 miles to St. Louis, Missouri for a
show at Busch Stadium in the pouring rain. A make-shift tarp keeps the
group somewhat dry, but the accumulative effect of the “bigger than
Jesus” controversy, the death threats, the demonstrations and the rain
cement the group’s decision to stop touring.
1968 – Jerry Lee Lewis agrees to play Iago in a controversial (and
ultimately disastrous) rock-opera version of Shakespeare's Othello
entitled Catch My Soul.
1971 – Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, Hawkwind, Duster Bennett, Brewers
Droop, Indian Summer, Graphite, and Queen all appear at the Carnon
Downs Festival at the Tregye Country Club in Truro, Cornwall.
1972 – At a Jefferson Airplane show in Akron, Ohio, a fight breaks out
on stage between the band and local police when guitarist Paul Kantner
refers to them as "pigs." Grace Slick is maced in the eyes, Kantner is
injured after being thrown to the floor, and Jack Casady is arrested.
Spectators throw rocks at the police, who respond with tear gas.
1976 – The Rolling Stones, 10CC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Todd Rundgren's
Utopia and Hot Tuna all appear at Knebworth.
1976 – RCA Records announces that sales of Elvis Presley records has
surpassed the 400 million mark.
1979 – Gary Numan releases his single, “Cars” b/w “Asylum.”
1982 – U2’s Bono marries Alison Stewart.
1983 – Guitarist Johnny Ramone undergoes four hours of surgery to
remove blood clots from his brain after being found unconscious on a
New York street after a fight.
1993 – Following up on molestation allegations made by a child who had
recently spent time there, the L.A.P.D. raids Michael Jackson’s
Neverland Ranch looking for incriminating evidence.
1994 – While on probation for drunk driving, John Denver crashes his
Porsche into a tree and is arrested again for drunk driving.
1994 – During her concert at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California,
Whitney Houston asks that the spotlight be turned on Justin and Sydney
Simpson, whose father O.J. Simpson is currently on trial for murder.
1996 – After serving only two years of his original five-year sentence
for kidnapping and torture, Rick James is released from Folsom Prison.
1997 – Former Stone Roses drummer Alan Wren, in court for driving with
no car insurance, loses his temper with a top Manchester Magistrate
and is jailed for seven days.
2000 – Survivor lead guitarist Frank Sullivan files a lawsuit in
Chicago against TVT Records and CBS for their alleged "unauthorized
use" of the Survivor trademark (registered back in 1977) on the
reality TV show and their soundtrack CD.
2003 – Johnny Cash holds his final recording session, recording the
song "Engine One-Forty-Three" at the Cash Cabin Studio in
Hendersonville.
2008 – Convicted pedophile Gary Glitter is refused entry into Hong
Kong after being deported from Thailand. Banned entry in 19 other
countries, and with nowhere else to go, he returns to Thailand.
