1963 – The Rolling Stones make their debut appearance on Ready Steady
Go!, lip-synching to their single, “Come On.”
1964 – The Beatles play the Hollywood Bowl. The show is recorded by
Capitol Records for possible future release.
1966 – The Beatles appear at Shea Stadium, but do not sell out the
venue like they did the previous year.
1967 – Herman’s Hermits appear at Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan,
with The Who as opening act. Following the show, Keith Moon,
celebrating his 21st birthday, accidently drives a Lincoln Continental
into the Holiday Inn swimming pool.
1967 – Joni Mitchell makes her UK stage debut opening for The
Piccadilly Line at the Marquee Club in London.
1968 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience appears at the Singer Bowl in
Flushing Meadow Park, New York, with opening acts Soft Machine and Big
Brother and The Holding Company.
1970 – The Velvet Underground, performing at Max’s Kansas City in New
York during their nine-week summer engagement, are recorded during
their sets by Andy Warhol associate Bridgid Polk, who records the show
on a portable cassette tape player. The tape will see album release
two years later as Live At Max's Kansas City.
1974 – John Lennon claims to have seen a UFO, as noted in the liner
notes on his Walls And Bridges album: “On the 23rd August 1974 at 9
o'clock I saw a U.F.O. – J.L.”
1975 – Joy Division’s Ian Curtis marries Deborah Woodruff.
1977 – Linda Ronstadt releases her single, “Blue Bayou” b/w “Old
Paint” on Asylum Records.
1980 – The Heatwave Festival takes place in Mosport Park near Toronto,
featuring Elvis Costello, The B-52s, Talking Heads, Rockpile, The
Pretenders and others.
1987 – A 20th anniversary "Summer Of Love" concert headlined by the
Grateful Dead at Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angel Camp,
California, goes horribly wrong when an armed escaped felon, wandering
in the crowd, shoots a pursuing police officer while trying to escape.
Police shoot back and kill the man.
1991 – The Reading Festival takes place at Little John’s Farm,
featuring Nirvana, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub, Blur,
Silverfish and many others.
1993 – The L.A.P.D. announces to the public that they are
investigating Michael Jackson for child molestation.
1993 – Duran Duran receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
1999 – Don Henley sues Paramount Pictures for breach of contract for
not including one of his songs in the movie, Double Jeopardy.
1999 – Phil Everly marries his third wife, Patti Arnold.
