1926 – The Radio Corporation of America, later known as RCA, launches
its new radio network, the National Broadcasting Company, later known
as NBC.
1954 – Elvis Presley, along with Scotty Moore and Bill Black, appear
on the back of a flat-bed truck in the parking lot of Lamar-Airways
Shopping Center in Memphis for their grand opening. In the audience is
Johnny Cash, who meets Presley after the show.
1955 – The J.P. Seeburg Corporation introduces their Dual Music System
Jukebox, the first to hold a hundred singles.
1956 – Elvis Presley makes his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan
Show. Sullivan is recovering from a car accident, so actor Charles
Laughton is the host. Presley’s gyrations are broadcast across
America, and the show is a smash.
1967 – The Doors appear at the Village Theater (soon to become
Fillmore East) in New York City.
1967 – Fans unable to get tickets left standing outside riot at a sold-
out Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich concert in Bergen.
1968 – The Beatles record their fourth and final version of “Helter
Skelter.”
1968 – Buck Owens and The Buckaroos play at the White House for
President and Mrs. Johnson.
1970 – Elvis Presley begins his first tour in 13 years at Arizona
Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. The performance is filmed for
the documentary, Elvis: That’s The Way It Is.
1971 – Led Zeppelin appears at the Hampton Rhodes Coliseum in
Virginia.
1975 – Wings begin their Wings Over The World Tour at the Gaumont
Theatre in Southampton.
1977 – David Bowie appears on Marc Bolan’s ITV show, Marc, dueting
with Bolan on “Heroes” and “Standing Next To You,” which ends suddenly
when Bolan falls off the stage, much to Bowie’s amusement.
1978 – The Rolling Stones release their single, “Beast Of Burden” b/w
“When The Whip Comes Down” in the U.S.
1981 – The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball benefit concert is held at
the Drury Theatre in London for Amnesty International, featuring
Sting, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Jeff Beck, Bob Geldof, Pete
Townshend and others.
1982 – Al Green and Patti LaBelle appear on Broadway in the gospel
musical, Your Arms Too Short To Box With God.
1992 – Nirvana's Krist Novoselic knocks himself unconscious during the
MTV Video Music Awards after being hit on the head with his bass
guitar after throwing it up in the air.
1995 – Singer Chynna Phillips marries actor William Baldwin.
1996 – Tom Petty and his first wife, Jane Benyo, are divorced after 22

2003 – Simon and Garfunkel announce plans for a reunion tour: the

2005 – The Liverpool City Council decides to bulldoze Ringo Starr’s

2005 – Former Ray Charles employee and engineer Terry Howard is
exonerated in a Los Angeles court for allegedly stealing dozens of the
singer’s recordings.
2005 – Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium is held at Monmouth
University in New Jersey devoted to his life, work, and influence. The
festivities include various live acts, as well as keynote addresses by
rock critics and figures from the music industry.
2005 – The one hour, commercial free Hurricane Katrina television
benefit, Shelter From The Storm: A Concert For The Gulf Coast, is
simulcast worldwide, featuring performances by Randy Newman, Neil
Young, Foo Fighters, Paul Simon, Dr. John, U2 and others.
2007 – Farm Aid 2007: A Homegrown Festival takes place at Randall’s

2009 – The Beatles’ entire music catalog is re-released in re-mastered
stereo and mono formats. Also released is the first video game to
feature Beatles music, Beatles Rock Band.
