1943 – Stan Kenton and His Orchestra records “Artistry In Rhythm” at
the Capitol Tower in L.A.
1954 – Sammy Davis, Jr. is nearly killed when he crashes into another
car on Route 66 in San Bernardino while driving from Las Vegas to Los
Angeles for a recording session. Three days later, while still in the
hospital, he permanently loses use of his left eye.
1957 – Chicago radio station WCFL bans Elvis Presley's records and is
picketed by the local chapter of the Elvis Presley Fan Club.
Nevertheless, the station doesn't budge.
1957 – Marty Robbins appears on American Bandstand.
1958 – Chuck Berry records “Little Queenie” at Chess Studios in
Chicago.
1959 – An unnamed RCA executive tells reporters that when Elvis
Presley returns from the Army, his music will be very different from
the rock and roll he performed previously. Manager Colonel Tom Parker
rushes to issue an official denial to fans.
1960 – While in Los Angeles filming of his seventh movie, Wild In The
Country, Elvis Presley suffers a bit of road rage and pulls a gun on a
group of people in another car who had supposedly insulted him.
1964 – Gary Lewis and The Playboys, along with the Wrecking Crew,
record “This Diamond Ring.”
1965 – The Kinks, The Who, Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames, The
Hollies and Wilson Pickett all perform at the Glad Rags Ball in
London. During The Who's set, lead singer Roger Daltrey storms off
stage due to constant PA problems.
1965 – The Doors perform at a Hughes Aircraft Union dance in Los
Angeles.
1967 – The Supremes and The Temptations perform together on The Ed
Sullivan Show.
1968 – The Supremes perform at the Royal Command Variety Performance
in London, and during their set Diana Ross interrupts the show with a
plea for greater interracial understanding. She receives a two-minute
ovation from the audience, which includes members of the royal family.
Queen Elizabeth II herself stands after Ross' moving performance of
West Side Story's "Somewhere."
1970 – James Brown marries his second wife, Deidre Jenkins, on the
front porch of her house in Barnwell, South Carolina.
1971 – B.B. King begins a European tour in London to coincide with his
25th anniversary in the music business.
1973 – Led Zeppelin begins recording demos for their next album
Physical Graffiti at Headley Grange.
1974 – Linda Ronstadt releases her single, “You’re No Good” b/w "I
Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)."
1977 – The Frank Sinatra made-for-TV movie, Contract On Cherry Street,
debuts on NBC.
1977 – Joey Ramone receives second-degree burns when a humidifier
explodes in The Ramones' dressing room at the Capitol Theatre in
Passaic, New Jersey. Ramone performs the show, but spends the next
week in a New York hospital burn center.
1983 – Tina Turner makes her first UK chart appearance in over ten
years with her version of the Al Green hit “Let's Stay Together,” thus
beginning her comeback.
1990 – Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan of Milli Vanilli are stripped of
their Grammy awards for not singing on their albums.
1991 – Paul McCartney's first classical piece, Liverpool Oratorio, is
performed in America for the first time at Carnegie Hall.
1992 – Linda Ronstadt “appears” as herself on the “Mr. Plow” episode
of The Simpsons.
1994 – David Crosby undergoes a successful liver transplant at Dumont-
UCLA in Los Angeles.
1995 – Frank Sinatra's all-star 80th birthday tribute is held at the
Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, featuring Bob Dylan performing
"Restless Farewell," at the request of Sinatra.
1995 – The first installment of The Beatles Anthology airs on ABC-TV.
1997 – Johnny Cash is admitted to Nashville's Baptist Hospital with
double pneumonia.
2001 – Mick Jagger’s new album Goddess In The Doorway sells 954 copies
on the first day of release.
2001 – Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland is arrested after
fighting with his wife at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas and is
booked on one count of domestic battery.
2002 – While greeting fans from a fifth-floor hotel balcony in Berlin,
Michael Jackson dangles his newborn son, Prince Michael II, over the
side of the railing.
2003 – An arrest warrant for Michael Jackson is issued in L.A.
following the raid on his Neverland Ranch the previous day.
2003 – Stone Temple Pilots announce they are breaking up.
2004 – Rapper Young Buck (aka David Brown) is arrested and charged
with attempted murder after a stabbing at the Vibe hip-hop awards.
Buck allegedly stabbed the man after he allegedly punched rap star Dr
Dre in the face.
2005 – Gary Glitter is arrested for committing lewd acts with two
girls in Vietnam after being detained at Ho Chi Minh airport as he
tried to board a plane to Bangkok.
2006 – The ill-fated Dylan musical tribute, The Times They Are A-
Changin', closes on Broadway after a paltry 28 showings.
2007 – Performing at Caroline Kennedy's 50th birthday party, Neil
Diamond reveals that his 1970 hit "Sweet Caroline" was actually
written about her.
