1956 – Elvis Presley begins recording his first RCA album with the
songs "Blue Suede Shoes," “One-Sided Love Affair” and others.
1956 – Billy Lee Riley records “Red Hot” at the Sun studio in Memphis,
with Jerry Lee Lewis on piano.
1958 – Buddy Holly and The Crickets, Paul Anka, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jodie
Sands and Johnny O'Keefe all appear at Sydney Stadium in New South
Wales on the first night of a six date Australian tour.
1961 – Songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller announce that they
are forming their own independent production company.
1961 – Sam Cooke records “That’s It, I Quit, I’m Movin’ On” at RCA
Studios in New York City.
1961 – Floyd Cramer records “San Antonio Rose” at RCA in Nashville.
1964 – Sam Cooke records “A Change Is Gonna Come” at RCA Studios in
Hollywood.
1966 – The Four Tops sing a medley of their hits, and SSgt. Barry

1968 – Bobby Goldsboro records “Honey” at RCA Studios in Nashville.

1969 – The Beatles perform live together for the last time - along
with Billy Preston - on the roof of the Apple offices, giving a 42
minute concert (to complete their Get Back/Let It Be sessions) before
being shut down by police.
1970 – T. Rex’s Marc Bolan marries June Child.
1970 – The Grateful Dead play on opening night of The Warehouse in New
Orleans, and are promptly arrested for drug possession.
1973 – KISS makes their live stage debut at the Popcorn Club in
Queens, New York.
1974 – Emerson, Lake, & Palmer’s Greg Lake is arrested for swimming
nude in a hotel pool in Salt Lake City, Utah.
1974 – Bob Dylan and The Band play the first of two nights at Madison
Square Garden in New York.
1975 – The Bee Gees begin recording "Jive Talkin'."
1982 – Paul McCartney is Roy Plomley’s “castaway” on BBC radio’s
Desert Island Discs, selecting Elvis Presley's “Heartbreak Hotel,”
Chuck Berry's “Sweet Little Sixteen,” John Lennon's “Beautiful Boy”
and Little Richards “Tutti Frutti” as some of his island disc picks.
1985 – Randy Travis records "On The Other Hand" at his first recording
session for Warner Bros.
1988 – In a court case involving Holly Johnson and ZTT Records, it is
revealed that the band Frankie Goes To Hollywood did not play on their
hits “Relax” and “Two Tribes,” and that top session musicians were
used to make the records.
1990 – Members of The Stone Roses are arrested at the offices of their
record label, FM Revolver, after an argument with the label's boss,
Paul Birch, regarding the re-release and video of an old song, “Sally
Cinnamon.” The group throws paint all over the offices, on Birch and
his wife, then vandalizes two cars outside. The band was subsequently
tried in October and found guilty and fined £3,000 each plus costs.
1990 – France honors Bob Dylan by naming him a Commander in the Order
of Arts and Letters.
1992 – Nirvana appears at Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide, Australia, on
their only tour of the country.
1994 – Natalie Cole performs “The Star Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl
XXVIII in Atlanta, Georgia.
1998 – Elton John is knighted by British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
2002 – Freddy Fender is released from a San Antonio, Texas hospital
after having a successful kidney transplant a week earlier.
2009 – A tentative settlement is reached after a two year battle
between the family members of James Brown over the singer’s estate,
assets, and rights to his music.
2010 – Neil Young is nominated as MusiCares Person of the Year.
