January 31 events –
1949 – Country music singer Kitty Wells records her first sides under
her new RCA Records contract, recording “Death In The Bar” and “Don’t
Wait For The Last Minute To Pray.” The subsequent single does not
chart, and she is dropped by the label the following year.
1954 – Edward H. Armstrong, prolific radio inventor and pioneer of
oscillation, circuitry and wide-band modulation, commits suicide by
jumping from his 13th floor apartment window in New York. Armstrong
was emotionally and financially devastated after 20 years of court
battles with RCA over his inventions. He was 63 years old.
1956 – Elvis Presley signs with the William Morris Agency in the hopes
of being offered movie roles. Later in the day, Elvis records "I'm
Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry (Over You)" and "Tutti Frutti" at RCA in
New York City.
1957 – Decca Records announces that Bill Haley and His Comets’ “Rock
Around The Clock” has sold over a million copies in the UK, mostly on
10 inch 78s.
1959 – Buddy Holly's Winter Dance Party Tour plays the Duluth National
Guard Armory in Minnesota. 18-year old Bob Zimmerman is in the
audience.
1961 – The television special Bobby Darin And Friends airs on NBC. The
special - Darin’s first - is meant as a pilot for a variety series,
but doesn’t pan out.
1963 – Seventeen-year old Neil Young makes his stage debut at a
country club in Winnipeg, Canada.
1964 – The first night of a UK package tour featuring The Rolling
Stones, The Swinging Blue Jeans, John Leyton, Jet Harris, Billie Davis
and Mike Sarne kicks off at the Public Hall in Preston, Lancashire.
1967 – The Beatles spend a second day filming the "Strawberry Fields
Forever" promotional video. Taking time out from filming, John Lennon
buys an 1843 poster from an antiques shop in Surrey which provides him
with most of the lyrics for his song "Being For The Benefit Of Mr.
Kite."
1969 – Bobby Darin walks off the set of The Jackie Gleason Show when
he is not allowed to sing his new single "Long Line Rider."
1969 – Billy Preston signs with Apple Records before joining The
Beatles for the final recording session for the group’s Get Back/Let
It Be project, focusing on three tracks not performed on the roof the
previous day: “Let It Be,” “The Long And Winding Road” and “Two Of
Us.”
1969 – Led Zeppelin plays the first of two nights as opening act for
Iron Butterfly at Fillmore East in New York. Zeppelin’s performance is
so powerful that Iron Butterfly refuses to on.
1971 – The Jackson 5 are given the "Keys to the City" by hometown
Mayor Robert Pastrick of Gary, Indiana.
1971 – The Temptations make their final appearance on The Ed Sullivan
Show, performing “Get Ready,” “Just My Imagination” and a medley of
other Motown hits.
1972 – Mahalia Jackson's funeral is held at Chicago's Great Salem
Baptist Church. Over 40,000 mourners attend the open-casket service,
which features a closing version of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand"
performed by Aretha Franklin.
1974 – Stevie Wonder returns to performing with a show at London's
Rainbow Theatre after only five months of recovery from a near-fatal
car crash.
1978 – The Broadway show, Elvis: The Legend Lives! opens at the Palace
Theater in New York City for 101 performances.
1979 – The Clash begins their first North American tour at the
Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, Canada, with tour opening act Bo
Diddley.
1979 – Paul McCartney signs with CBS Records for a reported $20

1990 – Members of The Stone Roses are released from jail and granted
conditional bail by Wolverhampton Magistrates court after the band
trashed their record company's offices the previous day.
1993 – Garth Brooks performs “The Star Spangled Banner,” and Michael
Jackson, along with 3,500 local children, is the halftime
entertainment at Super Bowl XXVII in Pasadena, California.
1997 – David Bowie releases part of his holdings in intellectual
property for sale on the stock market, becoming the first rock star to
offer Wall Street stock options on his career.
1998 – Bruce Springsteen’s Come Together benefit concert - organized
for the family of a New Jersey police officer killed in the line of
duty - is held at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. The
concert becomes an impromptu E Street Band reunion, with members of
Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes and Bon Jovi joining in on
stage.
1999 – Cher sings the National Anthem, and Stevie Wonder and Gloria

2000 – The Strokes play their first ever UK show at the Wedgewood
Rooms in Portsmouth.
2007 – At the Global Cool seminar on Downing Street in London, former
Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell presents Prime Minister Tony
Blair with a CD of his new band Satellite Party’s track, “Woman In The
Window,” featuring vocals by The Doors’ Jim Morrison. The “song” was a
poem written and recorded by Morrison shortly before his death in
1971, and later set to music by Farrell’s band.
2009 – David Gilmour appears at Coldfall Primary School in Muswell
Hill, London, for a cancer charity show with The Seat Of The Pants
Band.
