1948 – The Louisiana Hayride radio program premieres on radio station
KWKH, broadcast from the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium. Opening
night acts include The Bailes Brothers, Johnny and Jack, The Four
Deacons, The Tennessee Mountain Boys, The Mercy Brothers, Curly Kinsey
and The Tennessee Ridge Runners, Harmie Smith, The Ozark Mountaineers,
and Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys.
1952 – Harry Belafonte records “A-Roving” and “Chimney Smoke.”
1956 – Elvis Presley makes his first of two appearances on The Milton
Berle Show, which is broadcast live via remote from the deck of the
USS Hancock, docked in San Diego.
1957 – Elvis Presley performs two shows at the Ottawa Auditorium in
Canada.
1958 – Alan Freed's Big Beat Show plays two shows at the Coliseum in
Baltimore, Maryland, featuring Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee
Lewis and many others.
1959 – The BBC bans The Coasters' song "Charlie Brown" because of the
word "spitballs." They reverse their decision two weeks later.
1959 – Earl Taylor and His Stony Mountain Boys become the first
bluegrass group to perform at Carnegie Hall.
1960 – The Everly Brothers begin their first tour of the UK in London
at the New Victoria Theatre, with the remaining members of The
Crickets as their backing band.
1960 – Elvis Presley has a busy day at RCA Studios in Nashville,

1975 – Steve Miller is arrested for setting fire to party guest Benita
Diorio's clothes and belongings, and resisting arrest. Charges are
dropped the next day.
1976 – The Sex Pistols open for The 101ers at the Nashville Rooms in
London.
1978 – Cher's first television special as a solo artist, Cher…
Special, airs on ABC-TV to huge ratings. Guests include Dolly Parton,

1979 – Kate Bush makes her stage debut at the Empire Theatre in
Liverpool and begins her 28-date Tour Of Life tour: her first and only
tour.
1984 – Producer Jack Douglas is awarded $3 million in royalties due
him from John Lennon's estate for his work on Double Fantasy.
1988 – After each had worked on each others’ most recent albums,
George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison gather at Bob
Dylan's Studio in Malibu, California, and begin recording an all-star
single called "Handle With Care."
1989 – The Grateful Dead play the second of two nights at the
Pittsburgh Civic Arena, and 23 people are arrested when several
thousand fans without tickets try to crash the gates.
1991 – Paul McCartney Unplugged airs on MTV.
1993 – With his version of Leon Russell's "A Song For You," Ray
Charles becomes the first artist in history to chart a record in six
different decades.

1998 – Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe become parents for the second
