1964 – The Trashmen are ordered to pay royalties to Beechwood Music
for the liberal use of The Rivingtons’ "Papa Oom Mow Mow" in their
song "Surfin' Bird."
1967 – Jimi Hendrix is the special guest on the debut edition of Dee
Time on BBC-TV. Other guests include Kiki Dee and Cat Stevens.
1967 – Paul McCartney urges Derek Taylor, who is set to produce the
Monterey Pop Festival, to consider adding guitar player Jimi Hendrix
to the bill.
1968 – At James Brown’s concert in Boston, Mayor Kevin White asks the
singer to call for calm from the stage and urge Bostonians not to riot
in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the
New Generation club in New York City, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Al
Kooper, Buddy Guy, Ted Nugent, and Joni Mitchell respond by gathering
for an all-night jam in tribute.
1969 – Having become a “fugitive” for leaving Florida after the
infamous March 1 concert, Jim Morrison turns himself in to the FBI in
Los Angeles. He's released on $2,000 bail after being charged with six
counts of lewd behavior and one count of interstate flight.
1970 – Janis Joplin reunites with Big Brother and The Holding Company
for a one-off show at Fillmore West in San Francisco.
1970 – Brinsley Schwarz's promotion company sends 133 UK journalists
by plane to New York to see the band supporting Van Morrison at
Fillmore East for two shows, on April 3 and 4, at a cost of £120,000.
The event is a disaster. The group, who had planned to leave a few
days before the show to rehearse, is denied visas on a technicality,
but finally receive them on the morning of April 3, and arrive hours
before the first concert. The plane carrying the journalists develops
a mechanical issue which delays the flight, and when the journalists
finally arrive in New York 18 hours later, they are all drunk and hung
over. Brinsley Schwarz gives underwhelming live performance both
nights, which result in a flood of scathing reviews.
1972 – Elvis Presley releases his single, “American Trilogy” b/w “The
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”
1973 – Elvis Presley's January 14 concert, Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii,
which was broadcast live via satellite around the world except in
North America, is finally shown in the U.S. on NBC-TV.
1976 – The Sex Pistols play the first night of a residency at the El
Paradiso club in Soho, London.
1978 – Genesis performs at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan on
their And Then There Were Three tour.
1996 – Half of Jerry Garcia's cremated ashes are scattered in the
Ganges River in India by Jerry's wife Deborah and Bob Weir.

Bangalore Palace.
2007 – Keith Richards denies to MTV News that he snorted his dad's
ashes, and that it was just a joke.
2007 – In Sweden, Michael and Karolina Tomaro go to court with the
country's National Tax Authority about naming their daughter after the
rock band Metallica. Under Swedish law, both first names and surnames
need to win the approval of authorities before they can be used, so
even though the six-month-old has been baptized Metallica, the tax
officials decide the name is "inappropriate."
2008 – The Rolling Stones/Martin Scorsese concert documentary, Shine A
Light, premieres in select theaters and IMAX venues.
2008 – Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wins his court appeal against
organist Matthew Fisher's claim that he's entitled to 40% of royalties
for the group's hit "A Whiter Shade Of Pale." The court allows a co-
songwriting credit for Fisher, but denies him royalties because he
waited 38 years to sue.
2008 – Beyoncé marries Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter) at his New York
apartment.
2010 – Bob Dylan's planned performances in Shanghai and Beijing are
canceled when the Chinese Ministry of Culture denies the singer entry
into the country to perform, citing Dylan’s involvement in America’s
counterculture movement in the 1960s.
