1951 – In Montgomery, Alabama, an estimated 9,000 people show up for Hank
Williams Homecoming Day.
1952 – Eight-year old Gladys Knight wins $2,000 on Ted Mack's Amateur Hour
after performing a rendition of the Nat “King” Cole song “Too Young.”
1952 – Patti Page makes her television debut on CBS with her summer
replacement series, filling in for The Perry Como Show.
1957 – Elvis Presley's single "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" b/w "Loving
You" hits #1, and will stay there for seven weeks.
1958 – John Lennon's mother Julia is killed when she is hit by a car driven
by drunk, off-duty police officer, Eric Clague.

1973 – The Great Western Express Festival takes place at White City Stadium

Canned Heat, Lindisfarne, and The Kinks, during whose set a visibly
distraught Ray Davies, newly separated from his wife, announces on stage
that he's quitting the band and retiring from show business. He leaves the
concert, overdoses on drugs in a half-hearted suicide attempt, and checks
into a local hospital early the next morning for "exhaustion."
1978 – The Blackbushe Aerodrome in Surrey hosts "The Picnic" concert,
featuring Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Graham Parker and The Rumour, Joan
Armatrading and Lake.
1978 – Former Three Dog Night member Cory Wells appears on American
Bandstand.
1980 – Brian Ferry is flown back to London on a chartered flight and
hospitalized with a kidney infection.
1980 – On her 34th birthday, Linda Ronstadt makes her Broadway debut in
Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates Of Penzance in New York's Central Park.
1986 – After 26 years, Columbia Records drops Johnny Cash from their roster.
1988 – MTV bans the video for Neil Young's “This Note's For You,” which
shows a Michael Jackson look-alike with his hair on fire. The ban is soon
lifted and the video will go on to win MTV’s Best Video Award for 1989.
1989 – *Pink Floyd* plays on a temporary *floating stage* in the Grand
Canal in Venice facing St. Mark's Square. Approximately 200,000 fans crowd
the square, causing damage to buildings and bridges, and overwhelming the
authorities.
1993 – Midnight Oil gives a free concert at Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver
Island in British Columbia to protest the devastation of its rain forest.
1998 – Aerosmith's drummer Joey Kramer receives second degree burns when
his Ferrari catches on fire while fueling up at a gas station. The car is
destroyed.
1999 – Grateful Dead and Ratdog member Bob Weir marries his first and only
wife, Natascha Münter, in Mill Valley, California. They are still married.
2000 – Oasis appears at Reebok Stadium in Bolton on their Standing On The
Shoulder Of Giants Tour.
2000 – Bob Seger's 62-foot boat, Lightning, wins its division in the 78th
Annual Sailboat Race from Port Huron to Mackinac Island, Michigan.
2004 – During a photo shoot in France, U2 call the police after someone
steals a lone demo copy of the band's latest album, Vertigo.
2005 – Village People "policeman" Victor Willis is arrested after police
find a gun and drugs in his convertible in Daly City, south of San
Francisco. Willis also had an outstanding $15,000 felony warrant for
possession of narcotics.
2007 – P. Diddy receives more than 10,000 responses when he posts an
"Assistant Needed" job advert on YouTube.
2007 – Since it had never been done before, the UK music industry reacts
angrily at a decision to give away Prince's as-yet unreleased new album,
Planet Earth, as a ‘covermount’ with The Mail Sunday newspaper. The idea
proves to be a success, however, and Prince and The Mail will do it again
in 2010 for Prince's album, 20Ten.
2009 – Paul McCartney performs outdoors in New York City on the marquee of
The Ed Sullivan Theatre as a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman.
