1949 – Country artist Red Foley records "Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy" at 
Castle Studio in Nashville. The record will become the first 
million-selling country music hit.

1951 – Frank Sinatra marries his second wife, actress Ava Gardner. They 
stay married six years.

1953 – Pat Boone marries Shirley Lee Foley, the daughter of country music 
legend Red Foley. They are still married.

1956 – Elvis Presley becomes the first artist to chart an EP 45 record when 
the four-song Love Me EP enters the Billboard charts.

1956 – Country music artist Ferlin Husky records “Gone” at Music City 
Recordings in Nashville.

1958 – Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” hits the UK singles chart.

1961 – Ray Charles is arrested in Indianapolis for possession of marijuana 
and heroin in his hotel room.

1963 – The Beatles make their only visit to Ireland as a group, performing 
two shows in Dublin at the Adelphi Cinema.

1965 – The Righteous Brothers, Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, and Peggy 
Lee all appear on The Ed Sullivan Show.

1966 – Elvis Presley finishes filming his 23rd movie, Easy Come, Easy Go: 
his last movie for Paramount.

1967 – Reg Dwight (soon to become Elton John) and Bernie Taupin sign a 
songwriting contract with Dick James Music. Since they are minors, their

1967 – George Martin completes the editing and mixing of the six songs 
recorded for The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, and makes copies for Voyle 
Gilmore at Capitol Records.

1969 – Paul McCartney appears on the cover of Life magazine, very much 
alive.

1969 – The Rolling Stones kick off their Let It Bleed Tour at Fort Collins 
State University in Colorado. It is their first tour with new guitarist 
Mick Taylor. Also on the bill are Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and B.B. 
King.

1970 – Head of MCA Records Mike Curb announces a dismissal of 18 acts from 
his roster, claiming the move is to drop acts that "exploit and promote 
hard drugs through music." When label mates such as Connie Stevens and The 
Cowsills are also dropped, observers begin to suspect that Curb's 
motivation is in removing artists that aren't selling, and when ex-Animal 
Eric Burdon goes public with his drug use and demands to be released from 
his contract, the ruse is exposed.

1971 – Elvis Presley performs two shows at the Fair & Expo Center in 
Louisville, Kentucky.

1974 – Ted Nugent wins the National Squirrel Shooting Archery Contest after 
picking off a squirrel at 150 yards. The heavy metal guitarist also shoots 
27 other animals dead during the three day event.

1975 – A new world record is set for continuous guitar string plucking by 
Steve Anderson who played for 114 hours and 17 minutes.

1979 – Bette Midler’s movie, The Rose, premieres in theaters in the U.S. 
and Canada.

1980 – Mark David Chapman flies to Atlanta from New York to buy hollow 
point bullets from a cop friend.

1981 – The Kingston Trio reunite for a concert at Magic Mountain amusement 
park near LosAngeles, and film the show for a PBS program entitled The 
Kingston Trio And Friends Reunion.

1986 – Willie Nelson appears as a corrupt cop in the “El Viejo” episode of 
Miami Vice.

1991 – Izzy Stradlin quits Guns ‘N Roses.

1991 – Frank Zappa is diagnosed with prostate cancer.

1995 – Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille renew their vows in Virginia City, 
Nevada, four days shy of their 20th anniversary.

2001 – Actor/singer Rod Lauren is accused of stabbing his actress wife Nida 
Blanca to death in the Philippines, but flees the country before he is 
charged and can stand trial.

2002 – Twelve Guns ‘N Roses fans are arrested during a riot when the band’s 
gig in Vancouver is cancelled.

2002 – Bobby Brown is arrested in Atlanta for possession of marijuana, 
speeding, driving without a license and no proof of insurance.

2003 – The Rolling Stones appear at the Tamar Festival Site in Hong Kong 
after officials spend nearly $100 million in a desperate effort to reassure 
visitors that the SARS outbreak is no threat.

2006 – Orleans lead singer John Hall is elected to the U.S. House of 
Representatives from his home state of New York.

2009 – Joe Jackson files papers in a Los Angeles court requesting an 
allowance from his late son Michael’s estate to cover his $20,000 in 
monthly expenses.

2012 – One woman dies and 19 others are injured after temporary scaffolding 
collapses due to high winds outside Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, South 
Africa, prior to a concert by Linkin Park. The concert proceeds, with the 
band only learning of the death afterwards.
