1938 – Orchestra leader Kay Kyser gives a lecture at the College of the 
City of New York on "the inner workings and artistic features of swing 
music." Its popularity leads to Kyser to being given his own popular NBC 
radio show, Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge.

1957 – Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps perform “Dance To The Bop” on The Ed 
Sullivan Show. Other musical guests include Georgia Gibbs, Jose Melis, Kate 
Smith and Julius LaRosa.

1958 – Alan Freed's trial for allegedly inciting a riot at the BostonGardenson 
November 15, 1957, during his Biggest 
Show of Stars tour - where five people were arrested for fighting - is 
postponed for a year while prosecutors sort out the state's archaic 
anti-anarchy laws.

1961 – The Beatles appear at the Cavern Club for a lunchtime session, them 
perform an evening show at the Village Hall in Knotty Ash, Liverpool.

1963 – In Guildford, England, Surrey Grammar School headmaster John 
Weightman bans the popular Beatle "moptop" haircut, explaining that "this 
ridiculous style brings out the worst in boys physically. It makes them 
look like morons."

1963 – Singer/actor Tommy Sands performs “Real Live Girl” and “San 
Francisco,” then joins his wife Nancy Sinatra to perform "Old Straw Hat" 
and "Hey Good Lookin’” on The Ed Sullivan Show. Other musical guests 
include Robert Horton, Earl Grant, and The Kim Sisters with the Kim 
Brothers.

1963 – Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards present Gene Pitney 
with one of their first songs, "My Only Girl," backstage at the British ITV 
music program Thank Your Lucky Stars. Pitney will re-title it "That Girl 
Belongs To Yesterday," and have a hit with the song on both sides of the 
ocean: the first Jagger/Richards composition to make the U.S. charts, and 
the first UK hit for the pair. The Stones will record the song themselves, 
but it is never released.

1966 – The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” hits #1 on the UK singles chart.

1967 – Pink Floyd releases their single, “Apples And Oranges” b/w “Paint 
Box.” In the evening the group opens for The Jimi Hendrix Experience at 
City Hall in Sheffield, along with Amen Corner, The Move, and The Nice.

1967 – Monkee Davy Jones opens his first boutique in New York's Greenwich 
Village, called Zilch I, after the Monkees song.

1967 – The Who begin their second U.S. tour opening for The Buckinghams at 
the Shawnee Mission South High School auditorium in Kansas City, Kansas.

1969 – Conway Twitty records "Hello Darlin’” at Bradley's Barn in Mount 
Juliet, Tennessee.

1969 – Janis Joplin is arrested in her dressing room after her concert at 
Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, Florida, on charges of publicly using vulgar 
and indecent language during her show, after a policeman tried to use a 
bullhorn to control a crowd that had left its seats and had begun to move 
towards the stage. Joplin posts $504 bail, and the charges are later 
dropped.

1970 – Elton John gives a live radio concert from A&R Studios in New York 
City. Elton will release the show on album as 11-17-70.

1972 – Elvis Presley performs the first of three shows over the next two 
days at the Honolulu International Center in Hawaii.

1974 – ABBA plays their first gig outside of Sweden, opening at the 
Kalkonerteater in Copenhagen on their first European tour.

1976 – Olivia Newton-John's first television special, A Very Special Olivia 
Newton-John, airs on ABC-TV.

1978 – During Bob Dylan's show at the San Diego Sports Arena, an audience 
member throws a small silver crucifix onstage, which the singer picks up 
and pockets. Perhaps coincidentally, Dylan enters his "Christian period" 
the following year.

1978 – Led Zeppelin records "All My Love" at Polar Studios in Stockholm, 
Sweden.

1979 – The Guinness Book of World Records confirms that ABBA is the 
biggest-selling 
recording group in history.

1980 – Aretha Franklin and Sammy Davis, Jr. appear at this year’s Royal 
Command Performance in London for Queen Elizabeth II.

1990 – David Crosby breaks his left leg, ankle and shoulder in a motorcycle 
accident while speeding near his home in Los Angeles without a helmet.

1991 – Stone Roses drummer Reni appears in court on a charge of obstruction 
and claims that police beat him up after his arrest. He is fined £50.

1992 – Former members of Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, Jimmy Merchant 
and Herman Santiago, are awarded $4 million in back royalties for their 
1956 hit "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?"

1994 – Bob Dylan begins the first of two days taping his MTV Unplugged 
performance at Sony Studios in New York City.

1995 – Former Monkees Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork appear in 
the “Rave On” episode of the ABC-TV teen sitcom Boy Meets World. Band 
member Michael Nesmith is also present at the taping of the show, but 
declines an on-air role.

1999 – Mariah Carey is forced to abandon a performance on Rome's historic 
Spanish Steps after crowds of tourists surround her. She takes shelter in a 
local shop before been given a police escort to safety.

2000 – ABC-TV airs the documentary, The Beatles: Revolution.

2000 – With the release of The Beatles’ 1 greatest hits CD, it is reported 
that Andy White, who played drums on the included version of “Love Me Do,” 
will not earn enough from it to buy his own copy of the disc, since he 
still receives his original 1962 session fee of £7.

2003 – Meatloaf collapses on stage at Wembley Arena in London and is rushed 
to a nearby hospital with an irregular heartbeat that requires emergency 
surgery.

2003 – At 21-years of age, Britney Spears becomes the youngest singer to 
ever get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During her interview with 
MTV, Spears slams former boyfriend Justin Timberlake, claiming he was a 
huge disappointment in the pants department, saying, “Forget trouser snake; 
it’s more like trouser worm.” In the evening, ABC-TV airs the special, 
Britney Spears: In The Zone.

2003 – Country music artist Blake Shelton marries his longtime girlfriend, 
Kaynette Gern. The marriage lasts three years.
