the device may contain secret circuitry ; that operates to perform
other functions, such as a unit advertised as a webcam, and stipulated
in the units specifications: may have hidden
features such as a wireless radio, or cellular technology that
secretly connects remotely to another remote device. i may be joking.
it seems fishy when one cannot get a simple device like a generic usb
web cam to work with linux. I recall about 4 years ago: I had the
same issue with getting a logitech quickcam to work with Suse and
Mandrake.
What a clusterFuck. My advice to all. Don't buy cheap webcams - they
will most likely only work with Windows. Check with your linux dist.
to see what Cams are compatible.
Problems I have encountered with Ubuntu Linux:

Printer - Solved by downloading a custom PPD.
USB Web Cam - not solved. Loaded the driver but it displays ilegible:
grainy, green tint, scrambled picture.
Sound Card: Still investigating if I can record Live "what you hear".
I have to experiment with JACK.
Sound Features such as Audio Recording, Looping, Software Synthesis /
multitrack recording in linux is a monstrasity. Windows or Mac is alot
better.

Everything else on Linux is better than Windows!
