Are you invoking skype using LD_PRELOAD like you did with mplayer? If not make sure you do. If you are and it still does not work with skype try inserting the module using log_level=15 (insmod sn9c20x.ko log-level=15) and then posting the contents of dmesg after trying starting the webcam with skype.
