The decision to use the convention lang.wikipedia.org is not the problem. The problem is that they didn't bother to make a centralized login database. I cannot fathom the lack of thought that went into this decision, and they are paying dearly for it now. Considering the scope of Wikipedia, the amount of effort required to change which database is checked for login credentials is trivial.

That being said, I certainly can't see the Wikipedia convention making sense for the Microformats site.
