I'm talking about regional user groups, like clubs. Where people meet
regularly and they tend to focus on certain technologies or interest
areas. It can be pretty difficult to find out whats in your own area
though because everyone does it slightly differently, a lot of people
are starting to use event sites like upcoming, many of which use
microformats.
I want to try and promote microformats to these groups though, and
hopefully get people to ping pingerati so we can use it to search for
events. I guess I've got the idea pretty well formed in my head now,
just need to start pushing it.

obvious solution would be to create a website where people go and add
their group. I can't imagine if I setup such a site the take up would be
that huge, plus the data would quickly get stale.
I think you're on the right track here... a decentralized mash up
would be better and cooler.
My problem is that I'm not sure how to come up
with the right convention to start promoting, is a tag like "usergroup"
a good idea? There are very few examples of people using it, but I can't
find anything else specific that's used much.
I'm still a little confused on the overall idea. However, it sounds
interesting. Developing a convention/technique sounds like the right
idea. I would suggest not looking for people using "usergroup" as a
tag. I would suggest looking for examples of people doing similar use
cases. Perhaps you could elaborate a bit more on the use case you are
trying to facilitate?
