Yes, the idea was to make it more resilient against gaming by requiring the URL to embody the tag. This followed existing practice on successful tagging sites, and generalised it to a decentralised model.

Use an external tagspace. Having your own tagspace is not necessarily a good idea; you want the tag link to be helpful to readers. In many cases, linking to flickr, wikipedia, technorati or delicious is mroe useful than linking to an internal page that just links back to the post in question if it is a singly-used tag.

Also, the backend dev may be more amenable when you pepper your posts with external links...
