"A new 2kW micro-hydro design incorporating a turbine wheel developed in the
UK is now in use in the Sri Lankan village of Mitigahatane; it provides
power for a school during the day and for 20 homes at night. The wheel was
designed by Paul Bromley of the Pedley Wood Conservation Trust, a UK charity
involved in education on renewable energy and conservation. Working with
Nigel Smith of Nottingham Trent University, a controller was added to
regulate the wheel's speed, regardless of the amount of water passing over
it. This makes generation of alternating-current electricity possible."
A water wheel can also have a "therapeutic" effect on people:
"The Pedley Wheel has additional special charms. Its gentle pace and sound
offer an accepted therapy in this hectic and stressful world, whilst its
simplicity enables the non-technical user to understand its basic
engineering aspects, and thus to respect and care for it through a long and
useful life."
