Alastair, I am not really into microhydro myself, but for a synchronous generator the excitation current is normally taken from the generator terminals (or from the grid), rectified and fed into the rotor coil. The equipment usually consists of a transformer, some thyristors and a voltage/power-factor regulation circuit.
You don't write about the rating of your machine, but spinning the unit into run-out should be avoided on larger units. Anyways, I would first try to find out what equipment was originally installed and what happened to it.
