Hello Alastair,

As Mike stated earlier, it is most probably that the old generator had some
excitation system of his own, you should try figure out if that is still in
place, how to be re-comissioned and do some tests.

If the existing excitation cannot be used, then you need to know the
excitation rated winding data (voltage and current), in order to be able to
place an offer request to specialised companies. You need a static
excitation device (fed at 380 Vac or similar), as well as an electronic
gadget called a synchro-set, which will achieve the synchronisation of your
generator to the national grid. It is a clasical procedure (open gradually
the inlet valve, the unit starts spinning, your automation starts generator
excitation, it permanently compares the amplitude, frequency and phase of
the generator voltage with the grid, and when those are in a close match it
will connect the unit to the grid, then fully load the turbine, etc.).

The power source for the excitation can be from the grid or from battery
banks, or similar, depending on the excitation data.

Have fun !

Radu

Subject: [microhydro] Non exciting alternator problem
