I guess I'll take the other side of the coin...  Why NOT grid-tie?

If you grid-tie you can write off $$s for your "alternative energy" system 
(you'll have to check the applicability in your area).

Also, I would check to see whether having the capability to re-connect to the 
grid means that you have the pleasure of paying a monthy connection fee.  If 
this is the case, then a grid-tie might be able to nominally pay for this 
connection fee (this aside from the tax credit).  NOTE: you could avoid any 
monthly costs by having the utility disconnect you, but don't expect them to 
connect you back up pronto.

I would hope that we as americans still have the right to NOT purchase
something if we don't want it.....if your manual transfer switch is wired
per code please be a energy consciencious patriot and go off grid.....one
