Howdy,
In a previous lifetime, I was a web developer (I now write C and
Perl application code). I've accessed MySQL through Perl and PHP, and
stuck it into a web page. That's about it.
Last week, I accidentally discovered Zope. "Holy Crap", I
thought, "I'm falling behind a lot faster than I thought! Look how easy
it is to create cool, dynamic junk with this!" I've installed Zope and
played with it for a few minutes.
I am hesitant to use Zope because DTML (Zope's HTML-embedded
programming language) was all-new, 'proprietary' in some sense, and
redundant to PHP. And I've never used Python. "I wish there was
something like Zope that used PHP," I thought.
Today I accidentally discovered Midgard. I've perused the website
and the FAQ. I'm beginning to think that I can create new Open Source
projects with my mind, by simply wishing for them.
So I have some basic questions:
1) How fast is Midgard? I realize this question is completely subjective,
but is it really just the speed of PHP? Or is it slower than PHP because
of some hidden extra processing? How does it compare to ColdFusion and
Zope in terms of hits per second?
2) How does it compare to Zope? I've read the FAQ, but if any users out
there have tried managing a site with both products, I'd love to hear your
comparison. A feature-for-feature comparison would be nice (the FAQ is
rather high-level and philosophical in regards to this question).
3) When I try to access the demo admin site at
http://midgard-demo.marlowes.com/, it crashes my browser. I'm using
Netscape Communicator 4.61 under Mandrake Linux 6.1 (based on Red Hat
6.0). Has anyone else seen this? Will upgrading the browser help? The
Netscape window simply disappears after I type in the "admin/password"
login.
4) I've seen mention of version 2.0. The FAQ states it will be available
fourth quarter 1999. What are the major changes in the 2.0 tree (in
three sentences or less)? Should I wait until 2.0 comes out to
learn/install Midgard? What is the current ETA for Midgard 2.0?
Any help is greatly appreciated. If these questions are answered
somewhere else, feel free to point me to the URL. I've very excited by
the prospect of Midgard (and the website looks great! Kudos) and I plan
on installing it and playing with it sometime later this week.
Thank You,
Derek Simkowiak
