In the same sense PHP can be considered proprietary. PHP does have
a large userbase, buth both scripting languages are OSS.

This is a hard one, and I'm not going to burn myself by giving you
numbers.
You'd say it should be slower than PHP since PHP doesn't do SQL
processing
for each page, but then there is:
- if you're going to do templating in PHP I don't think you're going to
beat
  Midgard at it, and
- filesystem access is not exactly 'free' in terms of execution time
(ties in
  with DIY templating)

No clue

My gut says that a scripting language (Python) should not be able
to outrun a C language program but I have no numbers on that.

They're rather different beasts, FfF would not make much sense. They
both
solve problems in the same domain (user-, layout- and content
management)
but from very different approaches. IMO Zope takes more of the
application
approach, and Midgard more of the publishing approach. Strictly IMO.

2.0 will bring new features but retain the current ones. 2.0 is not
expected
to go to production release anytime soon, so I suggest trying 1.2.5 or
the
soon to be released 1.2.6.

1.2 -> 2.0 differences (for the user, not the core developers): new
security
system, improved packaging/replication, access to other DBMSs then
MySQL.
I am probably missing some but others can fill in their beloved
features.
