There is currently no direct way to authenticate against external
databases (such as LDAP). It is possible, of course, to copy user data
by some automated means into the Midgard database, or vice versa.

Can/does LDAP provide for a user ID of sorts? How is LDAP used for
shell authentication?

Yep, no problem. Midgard doesn't even know the difference.
