Daniel,

At United, we always had to have a 2nd person in the cockpit when one of the
pilots stepped out.

Thanks,
Michael

The two-persons in the cockpit rule should have been ironclad from the outset.
Another nail in the coffin of "single pilot" fantasizing.

LUFTHANSA: 10 MINUTES WITHOUT A PILOT – INCIDENT KEPT SECRET FOR A YEAR

On February 17, 2024, a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Seville flew for
nearly 10 minutes with no pilot at the controls.

The co-pilot, alone in the cockpit while the captain was in the lavatory,
suffered a sudden and severe medical episode. The Airbus
<https://www.linkedin.com/company/airbusgroup/> A321, carrying 199 passengers
and six crew, stayed in stable autopilotβ€”but there was no response to repeated
calls from air traffic control.

The captain, locked out, tried five times to re-enter using the standard code
before triggering emergency override access. By the time the door opened, the
co-pilot was regaining consciousness. A doctor on board assisted, and the
flight was diverted to Madrid.

And yet, the public heard nothing until now. Lufthansa
<https://www.linkedin.com/company/lufthansa/> and Spanish authorities kept the
incident under wraps for over a year, until the release of the hashtag#CIAIAC
<https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23ciaiac&origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED>
’s official investigation report in May 2025.

The cause? An undiagnosed neurological condition. The co-pilot’s pilot license
has since been suspended.

This rare but serious event has reignited debate around aviation safety. Should
airlines reinstate the two-person cockpit rule during flight?
