Fascinating. Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Pelee_National_Park> puts Point Pelee at 41°57âČ51âłN 82°31âČ4âłW but looking closely via Google Maps the southern tip is at about 41.909ÂșN, definitely below the 42ÂșN parallel which is the border between Oregon and California. Yreka and Crescent City are both south of 41.909ÂșN but Smith River is not, and there are some tiny California communities north of Ontarioâs southern tip.
I recently tripped over a variation of this when adding a new (still-hidden) feature to GCmap which lets you add geographical extents without faking them via hidden points, e.g., http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=e:US48 <http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=e:US48> They donât always work well because they are (mostly) derived from facilities in the GCmap database, which misses extremes of some areas and leaves blanks for political subdivisions which lack any landing facilities. When debugging the data for Canada, a noticed a âbugâ with Ontario. There is a debug version of the extent directive which draws its outlines and it looks like this for Ontario: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=extentv:CAON,CYPT <http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=extentv:CAON,CYPT> The âbugâ turned out to be Pelee Island Airport <http://www.gcmap.com/airport/CYPT>. It took my a few minutes to convince myself that is was legitimate and not crap data. (I did turn up some other data which was indeed crap.) -- Karl > On Aug 30, 2025, at 7:40 PM, Alan Bender via Mifnet <mifnet@lists.mifnet.com> > wrote: > > ï»ż > And Point Pelee, Ontario, Canada, is actually SOUTH of some communities in > California, including Yreka, Smith River, > Crescent City, and a few others. > > Alan > >> On Aug 30, 2025, at 7:04âŻPM, Helane Becker via Mifnet >> <mifnet@lists.mifnet.com <mailto:mifnet@lists.mifnet.com>> wrote: >> >> ï»ż And Cape May NJ is south of Annapolis MD and about on par with Washington >> DC >> Sent from my iPhone >> >>> On Aug 30, 2025, at 7:41âŻPM, Viggo Butler via Mifnet >>> <mifnet@lists.mifnet.com <mailto:mifnet@lists.mifnet.com>> wrote: >>> >>> ï»ż A map trivia is that Reno is west of Los Angeles. >>> >>> Viggo Butler >>> Sent from my iPad >>> >>>> On Aug 30, 2025, at 5:33âŻPM, Karl L.
