At the risk of drifting into NNN territory, it occurs to me that the European component of NATO has a hole card that Putin should consider. Both the UK and France have thermonuclear weapons and delivery systems, including in both cases SLBM nuclear-powered submarines, at least one of which is at sea at all times. It also reflects DeGaulle's far-sighted perception of potential US unreliability vis-a-vis a Russian threat, leading him to create an independent French thermonuclear deterrent.
This puts Moscow and St. Petersburg potentially at risk if Putin goes haywire and tries to grab the Baltics.. It also creates an excellent reason for Poland to go the Israeli route: Acquire thermonuclear weapons without publicly admitting the fact. I will stand by for comments from Mifnetters who have spent time at the sharp operational end of shooting wars.
