For different reasons, of course, but critics are everywhere. Myself, I make trivial use of it almost like LinkedIn (which is about as close to a social network as I typically get). I share some of my published reports and papers. These were hijacked by The Internet long ago, hence posting them via ResearchGate so that a few more people might read them doesn’t make a difference to me and is as far as I go. I’ve done this a couple other places as well.
