Yes, on the issue of do we continue to update the reference app the answer is no. The ne new community-app becomes the default app developed/supported and maintained by the community and the reference app is discontinued (it can stay there as code for time being as will work for platform versions before 1.14.0)
On the loan product cycles - 1 is the way to go. You basically adding extra rules around loan products. Not everyone will want to deal with 'loan cycles' though yet it is very common in microfinance so you have the following options on hand:
1) In UI you can have a sperated loan product screen for setting up cycle based products to other 'more abstracted loan products'
2) If need be and advantage to it - the platform can provide an API also for cycle based products over using a more abstract loan product api
3) At database schema level, you would still reuse existing loan product tables with need to add in support for many loan cycle settings
Note: There was no good reason for the limit of loan cycles in mifos and should not exist in mifosx - So its good that I should be able to add as many or as few as I like.
