Hello Ryan,
I have some suggestion in the instructional documents of mifos:
1. Pre-requisite of version upgrade. There is no clear instruction on
the pre-requisite version of mifos that the upgrade is applicable. e.g. version
1.2 can be upgraded to 1.2.1 otherwise it need to follow a map of version
upgrade.
2. Implication of the upgrade. Will this version affect the database
only, application only or both?
3. Precautionary steps. It is good that there is instruction on
reports, however, there is no clear instruction on retaining the records in the
database.
4. Lastly, seperating the instruction for new installation and upgrade
will be helpful to achieved clarity.
I know that this will not be an easy job, because you need to constantly update
the instructional document as mifos progresses/improve. I will try to give you
feedback on each step of the way.
Thanks,

Garry,
Those links I sent you, specifically the second one, are the instructions for
updating. Maybe they are not clear enough?
I’ll state it in another way. Please read these instructions all the way
through before beginning the upgrade.
1. Shutdown Mifos
2. If you have any custom reports, you will want to copy the “report”
directory in tomcat/webapps/mifos to somewhere else
3. Remove both Mifos.war and your expanded war file, which is the
directory mifos under tomcat/webapps
4. Expand the Mifos zip file and copy the mifos.war file into
tomcat/webapps
5. Start Tomcat. Mifos will automatically update the database on the
first run.
6. Once you get the login screen for Mifos, shutdown Tomcat and copy
the report directory you saved from earlier back into tomcat/webapps/mifos
directory. You can let it overwrite the report directory that is there now, or
you can just copy in all the missing report files. Be sure the permissions are
the same from before. Start Tomcat again
Is that any clearer? If so, can you please let us know. Also, if you could
take a look at the instructions I sent you again and give some specific
feedback (why do you think its for installing a new instance of Mifos instead
of upgrading? Is the text not clear or?)
Also, in regards to your second question, it depends on what version you are
upgrading from. If its 1.1, then it will be making both database and
application updates. If you are upgrading from 1.2, I think it’s only
application updates (fixing two bugs).
Best,
Ryan

Hello Ryan,
I tried those links before. The instructions were about installing a new
instance of mifos, not on upgrading the application and/or database. Anyways,
does the latest version of mifos (1.2.1) have changes both on application and
database?
What I did now is install latest version (both apps & db) so i can test it.
However, what I want to do is to have the latest update of mifos without
affecting the existing data and transaction on the existing deployment. Can't
find the exact instructions.
Thanks,
