Yep, it is a bug - http://mifosforge.jira.com/browse/MIFOS-3259

That being said, the workaround here is to not enter a date.  If you enter a
date, then the checkbox needs to be checked (Which really, we should have it
that if someone enters in a date, then the trained checkbox gets marked).
