Further to the message I sent a few days ago, I've inserted some
additional detail below.

The MySQL version is
mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.28, for debian-linux-gnu (i686)
The database "mifos" was been installed (and subsequently dropped and
re-installed several times) using the script
~/mifos-v2.6.0/install-ubuntu.sh
using SQL files from
~/mifos-v2.6.0/db/sql/
I changed the password for user "mifos" (generating a random string
using phpMyAdmin) and substituted that in the installation script. The
MySQL root password is also correct.
Installation of the database itself does not seem to have caused any
problems and MySQL is working fine with several other applications
(including a Java/Spring/Struts/Hibernate application running under
Tomcat 7).
I do not believe there is any problem with Java, MySQL or Jetty although
there may well be a problem (well beyond my understanding) in this
particular combination of versions (which, as I explained, are not the
versions specified in the installation instructions but are, except in
the case of the JRE, as close as I could get).
I was not able to follow the installation instructions in precise detail
because not all package versions specified were available. However,
Jetty runs fine on port 3300 and the root shows what I would expect at
http://snark.esrad.org.uk:3300/
(Ports 8080 and 8443 are in use by Tomcat, so I picked the unassigned
ports 3300 and 3301 to replace 8080 and 8443 respectively.)
The only problem appears to be in running Mifos.
http://snark.esrad.org.uk:3300/mifos takes me to the login page, but
when I try to log in using the default login name and password the
browser displays the tail end of Mifos.log . The database appears to be
connecting correctly.
I've tarballed a set of logs (from /var/lib/jetty/ a few days ago, when
I last had rime to work on this) and these can be found at
http://db.tt/GR0x7L2q
(I am aware that the earlier logs list a number of errors. These
precede the dropping and re-installation of the database. It's the
later entries I assume will provide a clue. I just thought it would be
simpler to tarball the whole lot.)
[NB I am not at all familiar with Java development. I am simply
trying to install a local copy so I can assess its suitability for use
in a Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI - a not-for-profit
lender to microbusinesses and social enterprises) of which I am a
director. When I have a working version on my server I shall be able
to share this with its potential users to evaluate. On paper, Mifos
looks to me like the best FOSS option (and I would very much prefer a
FOSS solution), but my colleagues are technophobes and will need to be
convinced that the system can be easily maintained in my absence. I can
set up scripts to manage backups, etc., and to automate most other
external functions, but with regard to the Mifos application itself I
have to rely upon other to guide me.]
