FWIW, we have seen equally good results with the WRT54Gv8 and DD-WRT
as with the WRT54GL. I think the only difference between these two
routers is the amount of RAM they have onboard (16MB vs. 8 MB), so
you have to run the "micro" version on the G. The G is $10 to $20
cheaper than the GL. The one downside is that the G is a little more
difficult to upgrade to DD-WRT than the GL because you have to wipe
out vxworks first and then upload the firmware via tftp. We've found
the little bit of extra work to be worth it however, given the
difference in price. When you buy 50 of these at a time, that $10 or
$20 per router adds up fast.

I'll look into the WRT54GL routers. We're going to upgrade all the wrt's
we have in stock to dd-wrt. And we are going to either exchange or
upgrade customers routers with dd-wrt as we experience problems.

I guess what threw me is that we suddenly had ten people calling in one
day about the exact problem. I suspect there is some type of traffic on
the network that is causing the routers to crash. Unfortunately I can't
waste anymore time trying to figure out the problem when I have a dozen
customers screaming at me. I need to get at least a temporary solution
in place.

Thanks you guys for your suggestions and I will post here if I find out
anything more.

The common factor here is Linksys Post v4 routers. I've heard of a new
micro version of DD-WRT that can run on these newer routers, we won't
buy a
WRT54G post v4 ever again. We have gone to paying the extra money to
put in
a WRT54GL in, we have not have any headache's from them. Just recently
we
purchased a batch of WRV200's to try out for customers as they were $2
cheaper than the WRT54GL, so far so good, but then again sometimes it
takes
a while for problems to show up.

Subject: [Mikrotik] Crashing Linksys Routers

Hi Everybody:

Over the last two or three days a large number of our client's Linksys

wrt54g routers have been crashing and requiring reboots. This is
happening in some cases once an hour. I have been seeing both v.6 and
v.8 routers crashing. When it crashes it appears to stop responding
completely from both the WAN and LAN sides.

We have upgraded several of the routers with the latest firmware from
Linksys but this only lessens the problem to once every 3 hours.

There doesn't appear to be any pattern to the failures. Some have been

in the field for over a year, and one was installed this morning.

Most of the failing routers are hooked up to either tranzeo cpe90's or

cpe200's. But this isn't saying much as 25% of our clients are using
one of those radios. And we have never had any problems with this in
the past. The problem just appeared out of the blue.

If anybody has any ideas or input please let me know as I am pulling
out my hair trying to figure this one out.
