I can't say anything about the g2 routers either, as I haven't used
them. However, I can tell you that the v8 routers are very solid if
they're running DD-WRT. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, I think they
are the same hardware as the GL except that they have less RAM. We
have deployed over 150 WRT54gv8 routers with only one DOA unit that I
can think of, and none failed in the field.

HOWEVER, I would stop using refurbs. I've been bitten by the refurb
thing too many times. There may be some refurbished items that are
equal in quality to new, but my experience has been that this is not
the case with routers. A few years ago when we were using Netgear
routers, we started buying refurbs, and started having nothing but
trouble. As soon as we switched back to buying new units, our
problems disappeared. My guess is that when a router gets RMA'd,
they put it on a test bench, boot it up, and run it through a handful
of tests that probably takes about 5 minutes. If it passes those
tests, they ship it back out as refurbished. Most of us realize that
a piece of equipment can be actually broken, but only display symptoms
intermittently. Conditions like that are probably never noticed by
the guys doing the refurb testing.

No experience here with those routers, one thing we found though, even with
the $30 difference is it worth not having to drive to the customers premise
to fix a problem that they see as "your" problem? I'm not saying everyone
should do this or it is the process for everyone, but we have found that
just putting in a solid WRT54GL at the customers has taken our service calls
for failed routers down by a large margin. I would say in the 150-200
WRT54GL's that we have in place we've only had 3 need to be replaced. With
a D-Link router we had we were nearly 60% that we would have to drive out
there, replace it, then get it RMA'd with D-Link just to have another crappy
router to take out to the next guy that has a problem. The WRT54G v5+ that
we've had experience with has just been that the customer has to reboot the
router several times a day, we've tried new firmware (from linksys) with no
changes, that's why we moved.

Subject: [Mikrotik] Linksys wrt54g2

Hi Everybody:

Does anybody have any experience with the Linksys wrt54g2 routers, any
opinions on reliability, range, etc?

We have been upgrading our current refurbished wrt54g-v6/8's to dd-wrt which
is working out quite well. However we have been having a fairly high
turnover on these refurbished models. Also I hesitate to install dd-wrt on a
new unit as it will void the 3 year warranty.

I was planning on purchasing the wrt54gl's but they are $30 more and when we
order 10 of them at a time that works out to be a rather large difference in
price. If the g2's are any good I would like to use them.

Please let me know if you have any input.
