them to work across other platforms...

It isn't "needed". It is only needed if you want guaranteed
interoperability. With things like 5 and 10MHz channels and WDS, there
is no standard for manufacturers to work from. That's why I say it
should be considered a "gift" if it works between manufacturers. :-)
