The Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites' calendar is set to roll
over this weekend. No one should rely solely upon GPS devices for

An election watchdog group warns against embracing Internet voting
without first assessing the potential security risks it poses. Among
the group's concerns are voter coercion, system crashes, attacks which

13 August 1999 Code Breaking Machine More than a Twinkle in his Eye
A man who helped create RSA public-key encryption says he has designed
(but not built) a new machine capable of cracking 512-bit keys in a
matter of days. This would put many systems used in e-commerce at risk,
but the military and banking institutions use much stronger encryption
programs.

12 August 1999 Security Specialists Scarce
The federal government is facing a significant shortage of trained
security specialists. Very few schools offer programs in information
security, and those who do graduate from such programs are likely to be
attracted to the higher salaries that private industry offers. A plan
to increase the number of trained security experts for the government
employment pool includes funding security programs at the college level,
and offering scholarships in return for employment commitments.

A California company plans to begin selling powerful telephone scrambling
devices in early 2000. The US government has, in the past, tried to
keep such products off the market if they do not offer some sort of
surveillance access. Even if they do get their product approved,
technology export regulations would likely prevent them from selling
the device outside of the US.
