I agree that this is wrong. I do make use of HELO information in the following way: 1) I block anyone who HELOs as *.roaringpenguin.com if it's not one of my machines. 2) I block anyone who HELOs with a raw IP address like 1.2.3.4. I do allow [1.2.3.4] 3) I block anyone who HELOs as [206.191.13.82], which is my server. I've not yet had complaints about these blocks.
