That should not be possible. Are you sure you're seeing slaves and not "mimedefang" threads? MX_MAXIMUM puts a hard limit on the number of "mimedefang.pl" processes (which show up as "mimedefang-multiplexor" if you're using embedded Perl.) There's no way you can have more slaves than that unless you're somehow running multiple copies of the multiplexor. As always, when something like this suddenly happens on a previously-stable system, and you haven't made any changes, suspect a network issue like an RBL server that's gone bad, or a database connection that's misbehaving.
