Better avoid editing the .cf file directly, rather than using the .mc
file and m4 to generate the .cf.

This isn't good. root should be avoided.

Judging from the permissions shown in your initial posting the
permissions should be set uid:gid of the mail user. And the mail spool
directory - /var/mail (here a symlink to /var/spool/mail) - should have
permissions reflecting this setting.
