Craig,

Gun crime is up (although "exponentially" is wrong), which is in line with a
general trend in a lot of western Europe, so I think it's a stretch to point
this toward the handgun ban. However, gun crime is down in a number of areas
since the ban -- mostly notably in armed robberies. A lot of gun crime we
see in urban areas is gang- and race-related; these tensions have escalated
in the last decade and my feeling is that they'd be hurting and killing each
other no matter what the law and no matter what weapons they could lay their
hands on. If all they could get were bricks, that's what they'd be using.

Knife crime is up, although the hysteria of rags like the Daily Mail would
have you think Britain is a bloodbath. There was talk about them stopping
the sale of pointed knives, it hasn't happenend though. I'd have issue with
that -- how the heck am I supposed to pair meat or make pretty flowers out
of tomatoes?!

Ian
