I've been looking into statins because I use them to reduce my chances of heart problems. Deep in the literature it seems that they work on this, but this seems little to do with reducing blood fats where the victim has this as a familial condition - thus the dietary crud advice that goes along with this treatment is highly suspect and probably damaging. Don may well have acupuncture right. I wonder why we just don't have the collected facts to make sensible decisions. I have little doubt acupuncture works through placebo, but I also know that one can make some people trip in ordinary fags if you tell them dope is in there and especially if you create a dopey culture around them (symbolic interactionism). I don't really believe morphine only works if you believe in it, but the complexity of biochemistry leaves room for many possibilities. The pathways involving cholesterol in the body are complex enough for me to need probably months of study to grasp - this is just one example. It even appears to be the case that large amounts of the stuff in diet actually cause less uptake to the blood, and increases in blood levels follow fat-free diets! I'm not a believer in Orn's orgy (sorry mate - couldn't resist the rhyme) of chanting monks - yet I feel very sure that we discount much that matters in terms of general health and a society of well-being. Something keeps us stressed and unintelligent - much as the mice are kept in 'penury' by the King mouse of previous posts. Cortisol is a bit of a favourite here (cholesterol is involved in making the stuff). The level of this gunk in monkey blood goes up when alpha types appear on the scene and we all surely know that sinking feeling when the bullying boss comes along.
What happens with much science is that a compelling story for lay people tends to dominate, and this leads to simplistic levels of argument and much irrelevance. The real arguments are kept under wraps. I'm with Don, and can reduce acupuncture to just one needle with morphine in it.
