Well said Lycan. Much (at least in my academic field) has been made of Freud's small book 'Civilization and its Discontents' - this rather favours the 'depressive position' though this doesn't mean going about being depressed. It's rather a statement of tolerance rather than the assumption of paranoid-schizoid relations that tend to demonise criticism. I rather like notions that mental illness can be part of a path to something more enlightened, but when depression kicks in it feels like an illness.
