I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness, which made an attempt to return in
it's own way to the way the early Christians practiced.  And I think
some ways it succeeded.

Christianity's roots are not in being an authoritarian religion.  It
was for groups of people meeting in fellowship in opposition to the
majority.  The religion has ideas of martyrdom and expectations of
persecution built into it.  They weren't expecting to institute a new
world order, they were expecting their Father to do it for them... any
time now.
