Personally I think we are much closer to actually be able to do it.. and I am sure within Rose's lifetime if not my own..
My design actually comes from memory of science fiction stories and I like the O'Neil link I will look into it,, My thoughts have been toward the cylinder concept (eventual) reaching radius of 1 to 5 kilometers though it would not start out that size and a length of 10 to 25 kilometers in length.. built in an onion concept so each layer could rotate to maintain normal earth gravity and i think the design would have about 35 layers with the out 3 to 5 being mainly for protection from meteor impact, I also think there would be giant cylinders of equal size and lay out maybe extending 200 to 500 kilometers in length.. the possibilities become endless, because you move to gather your resources,, and what else would you do with the materials except expand the habitat and create new habituates for expansion.. as far as astro turf..
