maybe they just got sick of opium and booze sandwiches for breakfast? to give you my opinion about your question 'is life really meaningless?"...the more one delves into their spiritual existance, the less signifigance is placed on material things. if the spirit becomes highly tuned in, passtimes such as eating and the consequential removal of waste (sorry), become more like a chore than a pleasure and can seem quite mundane. even the act of breathing, while vital, exemplifies our human reliability on such for existance.
